Former Todd’s Farm resident Martha Sylvia Ylinen Raukko died Jan. 14 at the age of 95.
{reg}A native of Finland, her family emigrated to the United States in 1930 when she was 11 and settled in Highlandtown.
She married the late Waino E. Raukko in 1940. They raised their four children in Todd’s Farm. The couple were active in several local and state political campaigns.
“She was very proud that a vice president [Spiro T. Agnew] knew her by name,” a loved one said.
She served as president of the Fort Howard Elementary School PTA and as a Brownie leader for many years. She was also a member of the church council at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
She loved to travel, saw the U.S. and returned to Finland many times. She and her husband moved to Lake Worth, Fla., in the 1980s. She came back to Baltimore in 2003.
Survivors include son William W. Raukko, daughters Karen A. Ruberry, Mary E. Raukko and Nancy M. Raukko, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Brother Matti Ylinen and sister Ellie Raub preceded her in death.
