Lucille C. Hudgins

Former Dundalk resident and veteran teacher Lucille C. Hudgins died July 6 of natural causes at her home in Spotsylvania, Va. She was 94.
    {reg}The daughter of the late Nannie and Robert Healy, she was born and raised in Warner, Va., and had lived in Dundalk for 45 years.
    She graduated from Saluda High School in 1935 and from Fredericksburg State Teachers College in 1937.  During her 30-year teaching career, she taught at O’Donnell Heights Elementary School and at Roland Park Elementary School.
    She was a former member of Patapsco United Methodist Church and enjoyed reading the Bible and spending time with family and friends.
    Daughters Cynthia Simmons, Elizabeth Vermette, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive her.
    Curtis Hudgins, her husband of 31 years, preceded her in death, along with sisters Hilda Daniel and Addie R. Guess.
    Services were held at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home, with interment at Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens.{/reg}

    Lifelong Edgemere resident Ronald L. Carmack died July 6 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center of a heart attack at the age of 68. He lived on Veronica Avenue, where he was born and raised.
    {reg}The son of the late Jessie and John Carmack, he worked as a painter at the Sparrows Point Shipyard for 25 years and then with the U.S. Coast Guard for 15 years.
    Alice, his wife of 45 years, survives him, along with daughters Bridditt L. Spenner, Belinda Schultz and Veronica Buxenstein, sister Delores Siperick, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
    Services were held at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home, with interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial service for Inez H. Scott will be held Friday, July 27, at 7 p.m. at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, 101 Avon Road.    
    The Dundalk resident died July 11 at her home with family. She was 93.
    {reg}The daughter of Edward Z. and Mary C. Heath, she was born in Chester, graduated from  F.D. St. Clair High School in Cambridge and attended Princess Anne Academy [now the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.]
    In 1937 she moved to Harrisburg, Pa., where she married the late James L. Scott and raised three children. She worked for the Pennsylvania state government and retired after 27 years as a senior clerk. She was church secretary at Wesley Union A.M.E. Zion Church for 50 years and belonged to the King’s Daughters Club and the Zionite Gospel Chorus.
    In 2003, she entered the ElderPlus program in Baltimore and in 2009 began living independently in Dundalk.
    She was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Turner Station.
    Children Sharon H. Scott and the Rev. Dred Scott survive her, along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
    Son James L. Scott Jr. preceded her in death.

Irene D. Borowicz

    Longtime Dundalk resident Irene D. Borowicz died June 8 at her home of lung cancer. She was 84.
    {reg}The daughter of the late Sadie and Herman Newstrom, her family lived for many years on Nooft’s Farm on Manchester Road.
    She attended Patapsco Neck School before leaving school to work at Read’s Drugstore on Center Place as a counter waitress. She also worked at Crown Cork & Seal as a tin flopper. Later in life she was an employee at F. A. Davis Company, where she retired.
    As an adult, she lived on Port Street in Baltimore for many years where she met her future husband, the late Thaddeus Borowicz. The couple married in July 2007 after a long friendship.
    She enjoyed bus trips to casinos, watching the Orioles, tending her flower garden and taking care of her home. She was fond of her neighbors, children and pets.
    Sisters Dot Paciocco, Laura Daley and Fran Pettie survive her.
    Siblings Shirley Miceli, Charles Smith and Bernard Newstrom predeceased her.
    A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church following services at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. Interment was at St. Stanislaus Cemetery.{/reg}

    A memorial service for Irene A. Callahan will  be held Friday, July 27, 11 a.m. at Central Baptist Church, 404 N. Marlyn Ave.
    {reg}The longtime Dundalk resident died July 19 at Gilchrist Hospice Care of cancer. She was 77 and had lived on 47th Street for 54 years.
    Born in Columbus, Ohio, she was a homemaker and a daycare provider for many years.
    She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Essex and Grace Church in Rosedale.
    She loved spending time with her grandchildren and her dog, Maggie. She also enjoyed gardening, baking and reading.
    Survivors include husband Charles E Callahan Jr. of 45 years, sons Charles III and David Callahan, daughters Linda Ziegler, Donna Geppi and Michele Stamper, brother Richard Bainum and seven grandchildren.     She was predeceased by brothers John and David Bainum.{/reg}

    She was employed at General Motors and retired after 30 years.

     Longtime Edgemere resident William K. Palmer died June 26 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center of natural causes. He was 101.
    {reg}Born in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late William and Margaret S. Palmer.
    He began working at Bethlehem Steel as a welder in the 1940s and retired after 30 years of service.
    He enjoyed boating, crabbing and fishing with his friends and neighbors in Edgemere.
    Wife Bessie M. Palmer and siblings Theodore K. Palmer and Margaret Hockenberry preceded him in death.
    Services and interment were in West Virginia.{/reg}

Stephen A. Grabowski Sr. and Marie P. Grabowski

    A memorial service for husband and wife Stephen A. Grabowski and Marie P. Grabowski will be held Saturday, July 28, 10 a.m. at Kaczorowski Funeral Home, 1201 Dundalk Ave.
    The couple were both lifelong Brown Avenue residents.
    {reg}Mr. Grabowski died July 12 at Crofton Care and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes. He was 92 and survived his wife by three weeks. The couple were married for 70 years.
    He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He worked at Western Electric where he retired after several years of service.
    He was an Orioles fan.
    Mrs. Grabowski died June 21 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of natural causes. She was 89.
    She worked as a toll collector and also as a seamstress.
    The couple enjoyed arts and crafts, woodworking and traveling together.
    Sons Joseph Grabowski and Stephen Grabowski Jr., daughter Cynthia Wilhelm, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive them.
    Additional survivors include Mr. Grabowski’s brother, Celestine “Babe” Grabowski, and Mrs. Grabowski’s sister, Helen Thomas.

Longtime Dundalk resident Joseph H. Cowman Sr. died of cancer July 13 at his home, two hours past his 80th birthday. He had lived in the community for over 50 years.
    {reg}Born in the Govans area of Baltimore, he served for three years in the U.S. Navy as a submarine engineman.
    He worked for the Maryland State Department of Transportation Highway Planning Division, retiring after more than 30 years. He also retired from the Maryland Army National Guard as a software analyst and information systems operator after 17 years of service.
    Children Deborah Brze-zenski, Joseph Cowman Jr. and Chuck Cowman, sister Jean Bermel and five grandchildren survive him.
    Wife Elise Cowman preceded him in death.      A private memorial service is planned.{/reg}

    Former Logan Village resident Jacqueline A. Hiebler died July 12 at Franklin Square Hospital of heart failure. She was 85 and had lived in the community for 40 years.
    {reg}Born in Baltimore, she graduated from Seton High School.
    She was primarily a homemaker but held various part time and temporary jobs as well.
    She was a former parishioner at St. Rita Roman Catholic Church and Christ the King Roman Cathlic Church.
    She enjoyed spending time with family, visiting friends and neighbors, making crafts, cooking and reading.
    Sons Kenneth Jr., Wayne, Thomas and Richard Hiebler survive her, along with daughters Patricia Kurzmiller, Nancy Crocetti, Elaine Black and Lisa Dail, 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
    Kenneth C. Hiebler Sr., husband of 40 years, preceded her in death.
    A Mass of Christian burial celebrated at St. Rita Roman Catholic Church was followed by a viewing at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. Interment was at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens.

Margaret E. Lenz

    Former Dundalk resident Margaret E. Lenz died July 17 at Chesapeake Woods Genesis Health Care in Cambridge, where she had resided since 2010. She was 84.
    {reg}Born in Masontown, Pa., she was one of eight children born to the late Sophia and Frank Kasinec.
    She graduated from Masontown High School in 1947 and moved to Baltimore, where she worked at a lab at Crosse & Blackwell.
    After her marriage to the late Kenneth C. Lenz in 1950, she moved to Dundalk. They were married for 51 years. In additon to being a homemaker and raising two children, she worked part time in the Baltimore County School system food services division for many years.
    She was a member of St. Timothy’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and belonged to the Henry Brecht Chapter of Eastern Star.
    “She loved birds and had several pet cockatiels. She was especially fond of her Yorkshire, Tessa,” a loved one recalled. She also enjoyed reading, embroidery and cooking.
    Survivors include daughter Deborah Roe, sisters Ann Yarish, Betty Wolfe and Martha Mudry and brother Charles Kasinec.
    Son Keith Lenz, brothers Michael and George Kasinec and sister Mary K. Swift predeceased her.
    The family requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity

    Longtime North Point Village resident Clifford Hoyle Sr. died July 15 of liver failure at Franklin Square Hospital. He was 76.
    {reg}The son of the late Burley and Alphia Hoyle, he was born in Sparrows Point and attended Sparrows Point  High School.
    He worked for Bethlehem Steel and then for Teamsters Local 311 and Local 355 before he retired.
    He was a member of Battle Grove Democratic Club and loved fishing.
    Survivors include Alice R. Hoyle, his wife of 48 years, sons Clifford Jr., William, David and Jeffrey Hoyle, daughters Elizabeth Behan and Bonnie Kramer, sister Lillian Argio, 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
    Siblings Bill Hoyle, Manley Hoyle, Mildred Hafer and Mary Parker predeceased him.
    Services were held at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home, with burial at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens.

    A graveside service for Hilda S. Parsons will be held Friday, Aug. 3, at 10 a.m. at Oak Lawn Cemetery, 7225 Eastern Ave., followed by a memorial service, 11 a.m. at Abbott Memorial Presbyterian Church, 3426 Bank St.
    The Roberts Avenue resident died July 18 in Fisherville, Va. She was 87.
    {reg}The daughter of the late Elmer and Grace Sauer, she worked at Western Electric in the personnel department and retired after 40 years of service.
    She was a member of Abbott Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed the Word of Life class and volunteered with the We Care program. She also belonged to the Sons of Italy and the Polish Home Club.
    Survivors include sons Merle L. Fisher Jr. and  Charles L. Parsons III, sister Grace Hollowell, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
    Husband Charles L. Parsons Jr. predeceased her, along with daughter Alicia Stevens, brothers Elmer, Francis and Michael Sauer and sister Ruth Zamenski.

    Former St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church pastor the Rev. Edward F. Reeves died June 24 in North Port, Fla. He was 96.
    {reg}Born in Sharon, Pa., he graduated from Collinwood High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
    After the war, he graduated from Capital University in Columbus and from Trinity Lutheran Seminary.
    He was pastor at St Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church from 1956 to 1967.
He also served in churches in Michigan, Ohio, New York and Florida.
    He moved to Florida in 1977 and helped establish Living Waters Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte.
    Arline, his wife of 69 years, survives him, along with children Kathleen Hupper and Scott Reeves and four grandchildren.
    Memorial services were held June 28 at Hope Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte.

    {reg}Born in Baltimore to Charles and Helen Bangert, she had previously lived in Berkshire for 30 years, as well as in other neighborhoods.
    She is survived by sons Robert, Timothy, Richard and David Huebschman, daughters JoAnn Monroe, Mary A. Brune and Janet Myers, sisters Helen Campbell, Shirley Stromberg and Anna Novak, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
    Husband Joseph Krepka, son Michael Huebschman and sister Alice Moyer preceded her in death.

    Longtime Queensway resident Donald S. Brown died July 19 of natural causes at his home where he had lived for 62 years. He was 90.
    {reg}Born in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Hector and Susie Brown, he graduated from Sparrows Point High School in 1940 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946.
    He worked for Pan American Airways in the 1940s and later was employed as an airplane maintenance inspector with the Maryland Air National Guard for 37 years.
    Survivors include Betty Brown, wife of 64 years, children Stephen, David, Annette and Dennis Brown, Susan McTighe, Joan Walters, Patricia Ketler and Karen Taylor, brother Stuart Brown, 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
    A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Rita Roman Catholic Church, with interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Ernest R. “Ernie” Zulke

    Longtime Edgemere resident Ernest R. “Ernie” Zulke died July 19 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center of natural causes. He was 79.
    {reg}The son of the late Ida and Ernest Zulke Sr., he was born in Chicago, graduated from high school in Illinois, lived in Sparrows Point for 15 years and resided in Edgemere for the last 39 years.
    He served in the U.S. Navy as a radarman 2nd class from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War and continued his service in the reserves after the war.
    He worked at Bethlehem Steel in information service for 34 years and retired in 1992.
    He was instrumental in establishing Little League and girls softball teams with the Edgemere-Sparrows Point Recreation Council in the early 1970s. He was umpire, coach, manager and equipment buyer and helped get sponsors for the teams.
    Patricia Zulke, his wife of 59 years, survives him, along with children Kenneth Zulke, Laura Auffarth, James and Jeffrey Zulke, brother James Gates, three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
    Sisters Bernice Harker, Margaret Proulx and Emily Zulke predeceased him.
    A memorial service was held at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk.

    She was a secretary at Chesapeake Terrace Elementary School for several years.
    She attended St. George’s and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
    Sons Philip and Richard Young and one grandchild survive her.

    {reg}She had lived in the community for 50 years and worked as a cashier at Mars Supermarket on Holabird Avenue.
    “She loved being with her family and cooking her famous Italian sauce,” a loved one recalled.
    Children Michael and Patrick Paul and two grandchildren survive her.
    Jerome C. Paul, her husband of 52 years, predeceased her.

Richard N. Novotny Sr.

Former Dundalk resident and avid fisherman Richard N. Novotny Sr. died July 1 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home of natural causes. He was 67.
    {reg}The son of Doris and Henry Novotny, both of whom predeceased him, he was born in Baltimore and graduated from Dundalk High School in 1962. He owned the 7-Eleven store on Trappe Road for 25 years.
    He was the executive director of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen’s Association, the first residing commodore of the Golden Anchor Yacht Club, a lobbyist for sports fishing, and a licensed boat captain. The name of his boat was “Oh Thank Heaven.”
    He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a parishoner at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church and president of Fox Ridge Teen Association. 
    Mildred, his wife of 47 years, survives him, along with sons Glenn M. and Richard N. Novotny Jr., daughter Laura McCormick, siblings Ronald and Cynthia Novotny, Jeannette Novotny-Hash and five granddaughters.
    A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church following a viewing at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home.
