Virginia F. “Ginny” Schaffer

    A celebration of the life Virginia G. “Ginny” Schaffer will be held Sunday, Dec. 8, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the UAW Hall at 1010 S. Oldham St.
    {reg}The Dundalk resident died Nov. 14 of ovarian cancer at her home on German Hill Road at the age of 63.
    She was born, raised  and graduated from high school in Ely, Minn. She earned an associate degree at Dundalk Community College (now CCBC Dundalk).
    She worked at Legg Mason and later at FRP Development. She was a longtime member of Synergy Community Church and studied Braille for the purpose of transcribing Bible verses for the blind.
    Robert “Sonny” Schaffer, her husband of 21 years, son Jeffrey Floyd, daughter Audra Dugué, sister Josephine Yaroshefski and four grandchildren survive her.

F. Clare Alsop Urquhart

A memorial service for F. Clare Alsop Urquhart will be held Friday, Nov. 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. at 1024 S. Decker Avenue in Canton.
    {reg}The former Portship Road resident died at her home on Nov. 21 of kidney failure at the age of 84.
    Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, she graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in that city and emigrated to the U.S. in 1964.
    A housewife and mother of six, her family remembered her as a beautiful sewer, knitter and baker.
    Sons Robert G., Richard A. and John C. Urquhart, daughters Frances Urquhart Le, Mary Clare Urquhart and Helen Urquhart Hartman, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive her.
    Her husband Robert G. Urquhart died in 1977. A sister and three brothers also preceded her in death.

 Services for Lou Markel will be held Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 10 a.m. at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home, 7922 Wise Ave., with interment at Parkwood Cemetery.
    {reg}The lifelong Lodge Forest resident and owner of Markel’s Boat Yard died Nov. 23 at his home at the age of 72.
    He was born and raised on North Point Creek Road. After retiring from the Defense Investigative Service in 1982, he operated the boatyard until his death. He was a licensed captain who enjoyed boating and fishing.
    He served as secretary of the Millers Island-Edgemere Business Association for 10 years.
    Parents Dorothy and Louis F. Markel preceded him in death, along with sister Norma Y. Stachowski, half sisters Minnie A. Hudspeth and E. Gwendolyn Davison and half brother Walter E. Markel.

Dundalk resident Mary Shaffer-Doty died Oct. 30 of acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 54.
    {reg}She had also lived in Sparrows Point and Essex and was born in Baltimore. She worked at M.A.D. Taxes.
    Stepmother Dee Leishure, sons David Walls and Alfred Schober III, daughter Judy Turner, brother Clyde Leishure, sisters Kim Leishure, Luckie Khan, Tina Flowers, Hope Lilly, Lena Hessey and Shirley Shaffer and eight grandchildren survive her.
    Parents Clyde and Mary Lilly preceded her in death.{/reg}

    Longtime Trappe Road resident Vera R. Schissler died Nov. 15 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center at the age of 88.
   {reg} She was a homemaker and mother of two.
    She leaves behind daughters Barbara Wajbel and Joyce Paska, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Doris Emma Smith

Baybriar Road resident Doris Emma Smith died Nov. 16 at Gilchrist Hospice Care of esophageal cancer. She was 83 and had lived in Dundalk for eight years.
    {reg}The daughter of John and Katherine Wozny was born, raised and spent most of her life in Baltimore.
    She retired from Maryland National Bank at the age of 55. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchilden and playing bingo, “where she made many great friends,” a loved one said. “She seemed to be loved by everyone that met her.”
    Children Beverly Grady, Thomas Smith and Larry Smith survive her, along with six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and sister Elizabeth Bounds.
    Husband Thomas George Smith and sister Suzanne Taylor preceded her in death.
    Her body was donated to the Maryland Board of Anatomy at her request.{/reg}

    Viewing for James J. Miller will take place Friday, Dec. 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk, 7110 Sollers Point Road, with interment at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
    {reg}The Dundalk resident died Dec. 2 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center of cancer. He was 77 and had lived in the community for 48 years.
    He served in the U.S. Army and worked at Western Electric and later at Edenwald Retirement Home.
    He loved watching wrestling and taking long drives in the country.
    Sons Joe and John Miller, daughter Kendra Kerfoot, sister Marlene and three grandchildren survive him.
    Rosalie Miller, his wife of 52 years, and sister Deborah Dye preceded him in death.{/reg}

Former Dundalk resident Daniel J. Goddard died Nov. 25 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del. He was 74 and lived in Hochessin, Del.
    {reg}Born in Baltimore, he played semi-professional football when the Baltimore Colts played.
    He worked at the plate department at Bethlehem Steel for 40 years and retired as a supervisor. He volunteered for hospice organizations and Animal Friends.
    Irene Procek Goddard, his wife of 9 years, son Daniel Goddard, daughters Kimberly Meyers, Dana Hormess and Lisa Goddard and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive him.
    Parents Kark and Emma Goddard, stepfather John Andrzejewski and daughter Linda Goddard preceded him in death.
    A memorial service at All Saints Cemetery in Wilmington is pending.{/reg}

Elizabeth M. Perry of Searles Road died Nov. 19 at Heritage Center after a long illness. She was 64.
    {reg}The daughter of the late Clayton C. and Irma M. Perry graduated from Dundalk High School in 1967. She worked at 1st Mariner Bank until her retirement due to declining health.
    She is survived by brothers Clayton C. Perry Jr. and Michael A. Perry Sr.

Patricia Rose Tirabassi

Patricia Rose Tirabassi of Edgemere died unexpectedly on Nov. 12 at Franklin Square Hospital at the age of 55.
     {reg}The former Patrica Ramsey was born in Baltimore, was a 1976 graduate of Patterson High School and resided in Edgemere for the past 17 years.  She was a loving mother, grandmother and homemaker and worked in banking administration for over a decade.  She was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan who enjoyed watching games with her husband, children and grandchildren.
    She is survived by her husband of 35 years, John Tirabassi, children John J. and Amy Tirabassi, Julia and Brian Head, stepchildren, Philip and Joanne Tirabassi, Lynnet Tirabassi, Philomena and Michael Alexiou, 11 grandchildren, three brothers, and two sisters.
    Father Merle Fisher and mother Betty Fisher preceded her in death.
    A private celebration of her life was held by her immediate family.{/reg}

Thomas F. Karle Sr.

    Dundalk native Thomas F. Karle Sr. died Nov. 19 in Towson at the age of 70. He had previously lived on Tilghman Island and in Essex.
   {reg} He was raised on 45th Street, graduated from high school and served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a carpenter for 40 years and helped build the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel.
    His interests included crabbing, fishing, gambling, dogs and treasure hunting. He and a friend once discovered an 18-foot long cannon on Fort Carroll Island which they moved to the shore.
    He loved spending time with his five grandchildren. Survivors also include son Thomas Karle Jr., two daughters and one sister.

Elizabeth Jennie Applegarth Coleman

Former Dundalk resident Elizabeth Jennie Applegarth Coleman died Nov. 26 in West New York, N.J., her home ofmany years. Known as
Betty to family and friends, she was 83.  
    {reg}The daughter of the late Charles Robert and Elizabeth Benjamin Applegarth was born in Franklin, Pa. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Dundalk. She was a member of the first graduating class of Dundalk High School in 1947.
    In December of that year, she married Wayne Haines Coleman of Dundalk, who survives her. The couple owned and operated the Coleman Appliance Company in Dundalk from 1948 to 1962. She later worked as a teller at the First National Bank in Dundalk and in Towson. After moving to Richmond, Va., where her husband attended law school, she worked at the First & Merchants National Bank.
    The couple moved to New York following her husband’s assignment as a special agent for the FBI in 1966. She worked at American Express in the city until her retirement.
    She was active throughout her life in Presbyterian and Reformed churches. She served for many years as superintendent of the beginners’ department  at Dundalk Presbyterian Church and at the time of her death was a longtime member of the Trinity Reformed Church in West New York.
    She enjoyed traveling with her husband and had visited most of the United States and 85 foreign countries. She saw Ireland, the U.K., France, Italy and the Caribbean more than once.
    Along with her husband of 66 years, survivors include brother Joseph Licastro.{/reg}

Dundalk resident and military veteran Samuel C. Simms died Nov. 19 at Gilchrist Hospice Care at the age of 84. He had lived in the community for 59 years.
    {reg}He was surrounded by his wife Joan of 63 years, and sons Glenn and Kevin. A granddaughter also survives him.
    He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. A Ravens fan, “he was really good at gardening and cooking,” a loved one said.
    Interment with military honors at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville followed a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church.{/reg}

Clarence “Clancy” Bivens Jr.

    Former Wallford Drive resident Clarence “Clancy” Bivens Jr. died Nov. 5 at his home in Winter Haven, Fla., where he had lived for nine years. He was 56.
    {reg}He worked as an amusement ride maintenance technician at Legoland.
    Survivors include  his wife, Kristine Lee Bevins, stepchildren Joshua and Jason Brown and Amanda and Omar Vega and two grandchildren.

George Raymond Murray

George Raymond Murray died Nov. 20 from major illnesses at his Berkshire Road home of 29 years. He was 60.
    {reg}He attended Patapsco High School, earned a general education diploma and drove a truck for 13 years before becoming disabled.
    He loved photography and served in the duplicating and video ministry at Edgemere Church of God,  which he attended for 29 years.
    He also enjoyed making crafts from scratch. “He could make anything with his hands,” a loved one recalled.
    Starlene Murray, his wife of 34 years, son Scott David Murray, daughter Melissa Lynn Murray and five grandchildren survive him.
    Parents Silas and Ada Murray and brother Fred Murray preceded him in death.

Daniel D. Clark Sr.

Longtime Dundalk resident Daniel D. Clark Sr. died Nov. 27 at his home of a blood clot. He was 57 and had lived on Old Battle Grove Road for 52 years.
    {reg}Born in Millers Island, he attended Sparrows Point High School and owned Clark’s Automotive in Little Italy. He enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    Survivors also include wife Wendy Clark, sons Daniel D. Clark Jr., Joseph Clark, Anthony Geer and David Geer, daughters Margaret Clark-Ball, Katie Clark, Sara Clark, Kelsea Clark and Shannan Adams, brother Edward Clark III, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
    Parents Sophie and Edward Clark Jr. preceded him in death, along with  brothers John Clark Sr. and Joseph A. Clark and sisters Sophie Watkins and Mary Lilly.
    Interment at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery followed services at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home.{/reg}

Eugene D. Nutter Jr.

    Longtime Dundalk resident Eugene D. Nutter Jr. died at his home on Nov. 28 at the age of 77.
    {reg}Born on a farm in Clarksburg, W.Va., to the late Eugene Nutter Sr. and Adie Pearl Ball, his family moved to Dundalk when he was seven.
    He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1955 and served for eight years in a military police canine unit. His duty posts included Lakenheath, U.K., and French Morocco. He was honorably discharged in Lincoln, Neb., in 1963.
    He married Janice Moody, his wife of 53 years, at First Christian Church in Lincoln. The couple had three children, Christine, Kevin and Mark. His wife and children survive him.
    He worked at the Omar Baking Company in Nebraska before returning to Dundalk in 1964, where he worked at Bethlehem Steel for 35 years.
    He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, furniture making and spending time with his family.
    Along with his wife and three children, survivors include sisters Donna  Blady and Karen Lauer, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Brother Ronald Lee and sisters Shirley Kogler and Ann Kenia preceded him in death.
    Services were held at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk, with interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

    {reg}She graduated from Sparrows Point High School in 1957 and worked at Bethlehem Steel as a production scheduler for 35 years.
    She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and enjoyed shopping and spending time with family and friends.
    Sons Jon and Barry Waszelewski, daughters Debra Kolstrom and Wendy Cramer, sister Susan Cederborg and seven grandchildren survive her.
    Husband Stanley Waszelewski and parents Melvin and Margaret Barts preceded her in death.

Harry Frank Roehl

Harry Frank Roehl of Dundalk died Nov. 30 of natural causes at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was 74.
   {reg}Born in Baltimore to the late Harry Albert and Bertha Amelia Roehl, he graduated from Patterson High School, served in the U.S. Army for two years and worked at the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn. He had lived in Dundalk for 43 years.
    He enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Fourteen and One Club. He attended the Dundalk Church of the Nazarene and belonged to the Edgemere Moose and the Ateaze Senior Center.
    Juanita Smith Roehl, his wife of 48 years, daughter Jennifer Lynn Roehl Bedell and two grandchildren survive him. Sister Margaret Anna Roehl Simpson preceded him in death.
    Services at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk were followed by interment at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.{/reg}

    Former Sparrows Point resident and Vietnam War veteran Ernest S. McNew died Dec. 5 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Easton. He was 69 and lived in Madison in Dorchester County.
    {reg}One of 10 siblings, the son of the late William F. McNew Sr. and Edgar Alice Moore McNew was born in Virginia. He graduated from Sparrows Point High School in 1963 and served in the U.S. Army. He belonged to Choptank VFW Memorial Post 7460.
    In 1972, he married Donna J. Wood McNew, who suvives him. He worked as a truck driver for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Rod and Gun Club in Toddville and enjoyed fishing, hunting, crabbing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
    Along with his wife, survivors include daughters Tabatha Gietka, Nicole Riffey, Tamara Jacobs, Tanya McNew, Donna A. McNew and Chelsea McNew, sisters Marie Hinkle and Phyllis Harris and seven grandchildren.
    Seven siblings preceded him in death.    Services are pending.{/reg}
