In a photo by Delma Taylor, Van Holland is shown trailing William Donald Schaefer during a Dundalk stop in the then-mayor’s 1986 campaign for governor.

by John G. Bailey

    Former Dundalk Eagle senior reporter Edwin Van Holland died April 25 at the age of 82 in Chevy Chase, Md.
    Known as “Van” to family, friends and coworkers, he covered local politics and community organizations for The Eagle from the early 1980s to the early 1990s.
    “He was well versed on the ins and outs of local groups,” recalled publisher Deborah Cornely, who was the paper’s managing editor during his tenure. “He seemed to have a rapport with organization leaders.”
    Cornely remembered Holland as a mild mannered and soft-spoken man. “But his demeanor belied a fierce capacity to dig out the truth in any situation,” she added.
   {reg} Former Eagle editor Wayne Laufert also spoke of Holland’s work. “Van’s no-nonsense writing style complemented his workman-like demeanor.
    Holland continued to write with a manual typewriter long after electric machines were introduced at The Eagle, according to  Laufert.
    “He was a creature of habit in the work place, and he taught me the value of keeping to a routine in a business characterized by disruptions,” Laufert recalled.
    After retiring from The Eagle, Holland served as speech writer for former 2nd District U.S. Rep. Helen Delich Bentley.
    Born in Georgia to the late Cecil J. and Lucille Holland, he moved with his family to Dundalk when he was five years old. He lived in the community until 2010.
    He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Maryville College in Tennessee and a master’s in English from the University of Indiana.
    He taught literature at Frostburg State University and later worked as a field organizer for disaster    relief for the American Red Cross.
    Cornely recalled seeing him occasionally after he left The Eagle. “We would chat a bit. It used to amaze me that he always looked the same — never seemed to age a bit.”
    Laufert concurred. “Fifteen years after he retired, he looked the same. He always had a newspaper tucked under his arm. That was Van Holland. A dependable presence who did what he did without fanfare.”
    Son Kent Holland and two grandsons survive him.
    He was interred at Baltimore National Cemetery with his parents.{/reg}
