James R. Jacobs

Dundalk resident James R. Jacobs died of congestive heart failure at his home on Sept. 18. He was 68 and was known as “Jake.”
   {reg} “Jake loved people and people loved him. He enjoyed life,” a family member said.
    He was born and raised in Edgemere, the son of the late James and Nellie L. Jacobs.
    He worked as a master barber and then as a machine operator at Raymond Metals, where he retired.
    He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, camping, fishing, eating crabs, spending time with members of his church and sharing Christmas with family. 
    Son James R. Jacobs, daughters Lisa and Nicole Jacobs, sister Linda Hupfer and many grandchildren survive him.
    Sisters Ernestine Klima and Diane Jacobs preceded him in death.
    A memorial service was held at Edgemere Church of God.{/reg}

Margaret L. Hill

Lifelong Turner Station resident and civic leader Margaret L. Hill died Oct 18. She was 76 and was known to family and friends as “Bootsie.”
    {reg}The daughter of the late Isaac and Grace Quarles, she grew up in Turner Station and graduated from Sollers Point High School in 1953. She was a member of New Shiloh Baptist Church, where she was baptized.
    She married James Hill in 1955. The couple raised five children.
    After 31 years of service in the federal government, she retired from Defense Investigative Services at Fort Holabird in 1995.
    Away from work, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, bowling and outings on her boat, “The Miss Bootsie III.” She belonged to the First Mates of the Pleasant Yacht Club.        Her community activism included membership in the former Feminine Distinction Social Club and the Turner Station Recreation Council, where she last served as vice president. She was also chairperson for the council’s Little League Opening Day Parade for 15 years and was business manager and coordinator for the council’s women’s softball team. For her dedication to the community, she received numerous awards from the Turner Station Development Corporation.
    “She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who truly enjoyed life,” a loved one declared. “She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.”
    Children Pamela Hall, Michael Hill, Felicia Stanley and Connita Hill, stepdaughter Lisa Hill, sisters Jacqueline Jones and Rhonda Quarles, brother John Quarles, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren survive her.
    Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by daughter Tyra J. Hill and sister Jennie King.
    Services were held at New Shiloh Baptist Church, with interment at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.{/reg}

Longtime Trappe Road resident Joseph J. Lam died Nov. 8 from cardiac failure. He was 59.
    {reg}Born in Baltimore, he graduated from Sparrows Point High School and attended Crossroads Baptist Church in Edgemere, where funeral services were held.
    He worked at Vulcan- Hart Corporation for 40 years.
    Mother Agnes Lam survives him, along with brothers Charles H. Lam Jr., James Lam, Russell Lam, Thomas Lam, Garey Lam and Mike Lam and sisters Judy Lamb and Tammy Diaz.
    Father Charles H. Lam Sr. predeceased him.
    Interment was at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Herbert L. Garrison

North Point Road resident Herbert L. Garrison died Nov. 2 at his home. The father of five was 79.
    {reg}He was born in Mount Fair, Va., served in the U.S. Army for three years and worked at the Bethlehem Steel shipyard.
    Lula Garrison, his wife of 55 years, survives him, along with children Ronald L. and Herbert R. Garrison, Patricia Conkling, Virgie Szymanski and Carolyn Kincer, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
    Interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery followed services at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home.{/reg}

Longtime Dundalk resident Clarence S. Greggs died Nov. 8 in Baltimore due to complications from surgery. He was 77.
    {reg}The son of the late Kenneth and Kathryn Greggs, he was born in Monroe, Mich., grew up in Sparrows Point and attended Sparrows Point High School.
    He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and worked at Owens Boat Yard and at Thompson Steel.
    He was an active member of the National Rifle Association.
    Wife Patricia Greggs, children  Monica Martin and Mark Greggs, stepson Allen Akers, sister Kay Kluver, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive him.
    Children Kenneth and Karen Greggs, brothers Struble, Kenny and Jack Greggs and former wife Joan Greggs-Cook preceded him in death.
    Services were held at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk, with burial at Moreland Memorial Park.{/reg}

North Point Village resident Sally B. Ruth died Nov. 8 in Canton. She was 85.
    {reg}Born in Pennsylvania to the late Samuel and Mabel Berkebile, she worked as a waitress at Haussner’s Restaurant.
    She enjoyed bingo and playing slots.
    Survivors include son Alexander Ruth Jr., daughter Linda Luckhardt, sister Sharlet Chaser, five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
    Husband Alexander Ruth Sr., son Terry Ruth and daughter Sharon Thompson preceded her in death.
    A prayer service followed visitation at Lilly & Zeiler Funeral Home. Interment was at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery.{/reg}

Lifelong Dundalk resident Elmer J. Morgan Jr. died Nov. 9 at his home at the age of 63.
    After graduating from Patapsco High School in 1967, he saw Italy and Germany during his service in the U.S. Army.
    He worked for 38 years as a life insurance agent and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
    Survivors include Hilda Morgan, his wife of 42 years, sons Christopher and Ryan, sisters Bobbie Weber and Joyce Newton and two grandchildren.
    Parents Dorothy E. and Elmer J. Morgan Sr. preceded him in death.

Robert G. “Bob” Reed

    Longtime Dundalk resident Robert G. “Bob” Reed died suddenly on Nov. 4 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. {reg} He was 72.
    One of six children born to the late Harry and Pearl Reed, he was born in Haysi, Va., and graduated from high school.
    He worked in manufacturing throughout his life, first at Greif Brothers for 37 years, then at Oles Envelope Corporation and finally at Dietrich Industries, where he retired in 2005.
    A longtime active member of Patterson Park Baptist Church, he served on several ministries.
    He played sports as a young man and was an Orioles and Ravens fan. He also loved gardening, going on vacation, hunting and fishing.   
    MaryAnn Reed, his wife of 51 years, son Robert M. Reed, daughters Karen A. Riecke and Janet L. Reed, brothers Darryl, Johnie, Billy and Richard Reed, sister Barbara Pasko and eight grandchildren survive him.
    Services were held at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk, with interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery. {/reg}

William T. Engel

Longtime Dundalk resident and Vietnam War veteran William T. Engel died Oct. 30 after a long illness. {reg} He was 62.
    The son of the late William H. and Irene Engel was born and raised in Sparrows Point. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he earned his general education diploma, in 1967.
    He worked for Grief Brothers until a stroke in 1994 forced his retirement.
    “He loved playing pool and drinking beer with his friends at Howard’s Pub,” a loved one recalled. He was a member of Raven’s Roost #5.
    Survivors include wife Margaret Engle, daughter Michelle Engel and brother Donald Engel Sr.
    Sisters Margaret Engel and Marie Gilbert predeceased him.
    A private memorial service was held. {/reg}

Former longtime Dundalk resident Versie Clemons died Nov. 13 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in Oldtown. {reg} She was 89.
    The daughter of the late Floyd and Annie Howerton, she lived in Dundalk prior to her move to Cumberland in 1982.
    For many years she was a waitress at Karson’s Inn before working at General Motors Food Service, where she retired. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and gardening.
    Daughters Barbara Vallimont and Mary Jane Roush, sisters Mary McCargish, Marie Williams and Peggy Reyard, one grandson, three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren survive her.
    Husband Curtis Clemons, son Eugene Clemons, four brothers, five sisters and one grandson preceded her in death.
    Interment at Baltimore National Cemetery followed services at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. {/reg}

    Born in Highlandtown, the daughter of the late Bernard and May Boehmlein, she graduated from Patterson High School.
    Son Jeffrey and brothers Raymond and Bernard Boehmlein survive her.
    Brothers Louis and Robert Niznik and William Boehmlein predeceased her.

   Sparrows Point resident William B. Stone died from cancer Nov. 2 at his home on Esquire Road. {reg} He was 69.
    He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965 and was a member of the American Legion in Essex.     
    He earned a general education diploma and worked in maintenance and as a crane operator at the Dundalk Marine Terminal for 36 years.
    Shirley E. Stone, his wife of 19 years, survives him, along with brothers Robert and Walter Stone, half-brother David Stone and half-sister Brenda Stone Dash.
    Parents Murray Stone and Virginia Kain preceded him in death.
    Services were held at Connelly Funeral Home.

    Former Dundalk resident Lawrence M. “Toby” Thomas Jr. died suddenly on Nov. 4 at the age of 26. {reg}
    Born and raised in Dundalk, he graduated from Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts in 2004 and served in the U.S. Army in Iraq.
    He recently earned an associate’s degree in information technology from ITT Technical Institute.
    Survivors include mother Frances Thomas, father Lawrence M. Thomas Sr., stepmother Martha A. Thomas, former wife Christina Thomas, daughter Sophia and brothers Joshua Thomas and Stephen Franks.
    Interment with military honors at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery followed services at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to a military veterans support group of choice. {/reg}

    Dundalk resident David P. Reidy Sr. died Nov. 6 of cancer at the age of 84. {reg}
    The son of the late Andrew and Violet Reidy was born in Baltimore, served in the U.S. Army and worked for CSX Railroad.

A Ravens and Orioles fan, he was a member of the American Legion.
    Sons Michael and David Reidy Jr., daughters Kathleen Wedge, Frances Lynch and Patricia Vicari, sister Carol Bair, 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren survive him.
    Brothers Andrew and Robert Reidy, sister Doris Myer and one great-grandson preceded him in death.

    The Dundalk native  died Nov. 24 at Gilchrist Hospice Care of congestive heart failure. She was 82.  
    {reg}Born in Baltimore, she graduated from Sparrows Point High School in 1946 and had lived on Dunglow Road for 41 years.  
    She worked as a secretary for a leasing company before establishing her career as a self-employed interior designer.  
    She attended Dundalk Presbyterian Church and was a member of the former Dundalk Concert Association. She enjoyed music, gardening and spending time with her family.
    Survivors include daughter Nancy Mackin and two grandchildren.
    Parents, Edwin and Virginia Pelter, former husband Richard McJilton, son Richard McJilton Jr. and brother  Arnold Pelter preceded her in death.

Evelyn “Dixie” Matlat

    Commitment services will be held for Evelyn “Dixie” Matlat on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at Oak Lawn Cemetery, 7225 Eastern Ave.
    The longtime Dundalk resident died Nov. 15 at the age of 100 of natural causes.
    {reg}“All the kids in West Inverness, where she lived for several years, loved her and her home, which was known as Dixie’s Hill. She was willing help anyone, loved animals and took in strays,” a loved one recalled.
    She enjoyed fishing, cooking and celebrating Christmas. She mowed her lawn and drove until she was 95 years old.
    She owned a gas station in Turner Station, drove a truck and worked in several other occupations.
    Husband Edward Matlat preceded her in death. The couple were members of the Shriners.{/reg}

    Longtime Dundalk resident Daniel D. Lopez Sr. died Nov. 18 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He was 84 and had lived on Oakway Drive for 40 years.
    {reg}Born in Arboles, Colo., he served in the U.S. Army and worked at Bethlehem Steel, where he retired in 1989.
    He belonged to the steelworkers union and was a longtime member of Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church.
    He enjoyed carpentry, watching western movies and spending time with his family.
    Son Daniel D. Lopez Jr., brothers Lee, Manuel and Pedro Lopez and sister Ida Enriquez survive him.
    Ida Lopez, his wife of 56 years, preceded him in death, along with brothers Antonio and Richard Lopez and sisters Angelina Barela and Florence Vallejos.
    A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church.{/reg}

    The longtime Dundalk resident died Nov. 25 at the age of 83.
    {reg}Born in Fort Mill, S.C., he moved to Dundalk at the age of 14.
    He worked at Bethlehem Steel for 43 years and was a member of Patapsco United Methodist Church. He also belonged to Patapsco Masonic Lodge 183, Highland Eastern Star and the Acacia Club of Dundalk.
    Sons Merle, Robert and Lawrence Long, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren survive him.

    A memorial service for Susan Panzarotto-Blair will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m. at Eastern Assembly of God, 7923 Wise Ave., where she was a member.  
    The Bear Creek resident died Nov. 23 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center from complications caused by an infection. She was 42.
    {reg}Born in Baltimore to Manuel and Benita Panzarotto, who survive her, she was a 1988 graduate of Patapsco High School.
    She worked in various fields, including cosmetology and phlebotomy. She was also a school bus driver.   
    “She enjoyed spending time with her sons and her many animals,” a loved one said.
    Sons Troy Pritt III and Manuel Pritt, brother Gus Economides, sisters Karen Wilson and Dareen Barrios and husband Brian Blair survive her.
